A 12-year-old girl from Kerala with drug-resistant epilepsy and severe underlying cardiac disease has remained seizure free for two years after undergoing a highly specialised minimally invasive surgical approach at AIIMS, New Delhi. The child had developed epilepsy following a major stroke at nine months of age and was experiencing one to two seizures every day despite prolonged treatment with multiple anti-epileptic drugs. Her complex medical profile made conventional epilepsy surgery particularly challenging.
She was also born with congenital heart disease and dilated cardiomyopathy, according to Dr Manjari Tripathi, Head of the Department of Neurology at AIIMS, Delhi.
