A consistent decline in the number of applicants to cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) training programs has been observed across the country over the last few years. This disenchantment with the speciality will lead to a shortage of trained CTVS surgeons at a time when the incidence of cardiovascular diseases is continuously rising in India. So it was decided to do a scientific study, asking the General surgery students (not CTVS students) for the reasons. This turned out to be a Herculean task, as there is no complete database of the general surgery students or graduates aspiring for super speciality.
