Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of rare disorders in which the bone marrow fails to prepare enough healthy blood cells. The distinctive feature of MDS is the combination of overactive marrow with low blood cell counts.

Most of the cells being produced in the bone marrow are of a poor quality (dysplastic) and are destroyed before they leave from the bone marrow.
