Soft tissue tumors are a relatively rare and diagnostically complex group of neoplasms. An accurate diagnosis of the tumor is critical for proper care and prognosis of the disease. Several advances have been made in our understanding of soft tissue tumor molecular biology and their diagnostic criteria.

The 5th edition of WHO’s classification (2020) of soft tissue and bone tumors incorporates the newly identified entities and subtypes of already known tumors, several reclassified tumors, and new molecular and genetic data. Surgical pathologists should be familiar with these newly developed molecular genetic approaches in clinical settings to improve diagnostic accuracy for tumors.
