The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) found a private hospital in Guwahati and its doctors liable for causing permanent vocal organ damage to a patient due to lapses in medical treatment, documentation, and informed consent. The patient, originally from Arunachal Pradesh, met with a road traffic accident in 2013 and was first taken to a government hospital in Naharlagun. For further treatment, he was referred to the hospital in Guwahati.
During his stay at the hospital, he underwent two tracheostomy procedures and was eventually discharged with a tracheostomy tube still in place. After discharge, the patient began experiencing severe complications at home, including intense coughing and the regurgitation of food through the tracheostomy tube.
