The transition of a neonate from intrauterine to extrauterine life may not be smooth all the time and some degree of resuscitation may be required, depending on its breathing capacity, muscle tone, and the gestational period. About 10% of newborns require some assistance to begin breathing at birth while less than 1% of neonates require extensive resuscitation. Neonatal resuscitation is a critical procedure performed to avoid the risk of irreversible organ injury and death due to the inability of infants to breath on their own.
