Neurological symptoms, the most prevalent extrapulmonary complications of COVID-19 , affect more than 30% of COVID-19 patients. A recent study, published in PNAS reveals, for the first time, the site of replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the brain and its effect on the nervous system. Overview of the study: Thus, the findings of this study provide evidence for the first time that SARS-CoV-2 is found in the human brain, where it infects astrocytes. Furthermore, these findings explain the various physiological and metabolic changes observed in the brains of COVID-19 patients.
