The bidirectional interactions between the brain and the gut microbiota are well-established. Gut microbiota can regulate metabolism, homeostasis, central appetite, food reward signaling, and adiposity by targeting the brain through the gut-brain axis, thereby playing an important role in regulating obesity. Furthermore, the gut-brain axis impacts behavior and physiological function through neural, endocrine, and immunological pathways. Hence, novel therapies are being developed to manage obesity by targeting the gut microbiota.
