An orthognathic surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to correct a wide range of dental irregularities may it be skeletal or non- skeletal, including the misalignment of jaws and teeth. Although orthognathic surgery is performed to correct functional problems, patient's appearance may be drastically enhanced because of surgery. The present article describes an overview of orthognathic surgery including its treatment protocol, surgical management, and complications.
Orthognathic surgery is the mainstay of treatment for patients who are too old for growth modifications and for dentofacial conditions.
