Osteoporosis is diagnosed by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) or, in rare situations, by the presence of a fragility fracture or a high fracture risk without regard to BMD. Examination of the secondary causes of osteoporosis allows for identifying and mitigating the possibly reversible fracture risk factors.
