During 1990s when the Streptokinase and Urokinase were introduced, they were unreachable monetarily for most of the people in our place.Going through the literature, a drug namely Oxyfedrine was used as parenteral preparation sixth hourly and the cost of the treatment was very less- around 10% of Streptokinase price at that time. I have presented a Paper” Oxyfedrine as a poor man’s Streptokinase “ in a conference - World Congress on Coronary Heart Disease at Bombay in 1990. The westerners did not know about this drug on discussion during that conference.
Now the parenteral preparation is abandoned and only oral preparation available.The cost of Tenecteplase is around Rs.50000 per patient.The cost of Streptokinase is around Rs.2500 now.
