After decades of legal, philosophical, ethical and most importantly medical debates, the Government of India has finally drafted a legislation to legalize passive euthanasia. Protecting medical fraternity from medicolegal risks is one of the key highlights of this legislation. Decades and cases have passed by, debates have been carried out and now finally the Government of India has finally come up with a draft bill that aims to give patients right to “withhold or withdraw medical treatment to herself or himself” and “allow nature to take its own course”.
Last week, Government of India has uploaded a draft bill which is titled as Terminally Ill Patients (Protection of Patients and Medical Practitioners) Bill on an official website and has invited comments from all sections of society but most importantly from doctors’ community.
