The management of cataracts in children is more demanding than in adults due to increased intraoperative difficulties, the propensity of postoperative inflammation, the changing refractive state of the eye, difficulty in documenting anatomical and refractive changes due to poor compliance, and a tendency to develop amblyopia. The use of an intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery is the most common means of optical correction in children beyond infancy. Despite several studies confirming the safety and effectiveness of IOLs for infants and children, concern remains about the unknown risks associated with an IOL.
