In general term we called it as pyorrhoea.It is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium. In India after dental caries it is 2nd most common disease among oral problems. Mainly preceded by gingivitis. Gingivitis is inflammation of gingiva caused by microorganisms due to poor oral hygiene.There are different categories of periodontitis - localized if it is less than 30% of total teeth.
Generalised if it is more than 30%.According to AAP classification of severity: Mild -1-2 mm of attachment loss; moderate 3-4 mm of attachment loss;severe - >5 mm of attachment loss Signs and symptoms- Redness and bleeding of gums Halitosis and persistent metallic taste in mouth Gingival recession Deep periodontal pocket Loose teeth Risk factors Smoking increases the occurence of periodontitis.
