The US FDA has recently approved ‘Alpelisib’ under the real-time oncology review program. The drug is approved in combination with the endocrine therapy ‘Fulvestrant’ for the treatment of patients suffering from postmenopausal hormone receptor, PIK3CA- mutated advanced or metastatic breast cancer. The approval is according to the updated assessment kit, focusing on critical thinking and reduces time spent on approval procedures. The metastatic breast cancer affects different functions of the breast as well as metastasize in bones, lungs, liver or brain.
The combination therapy is the first ever PI3K inhibitor assisting in the clinical treatment of patients with breast cancer.
