The metabolic effects of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are yet unclear. So far, little evidence is available regarding their potential role in primary prevention of type 2 diabetes. In this regard, a recent meta-analysis assessed the associations of the linoleic acid and arachidonic acid biomarkers with incident type 2 diabetes.
A new, harmonized, individual-level analysis for the biomarkers- linoleic acid and its metabolite arachidonic acid- and incident type 2 diabetes was performed from 20 prospective cohort studies across ten countries. The relative risk of type 2 diabetes prospectively for each cohort and lipid compartment separately using a prespecified analytic plan for exposures, covariates and effect modifiers were analyzed.
