Amniocentesis is a simple procedure done under USG guidance. Anyone having skills of performing antenatal USG and aspiration can undertake the procedure after due explanations to the pregnant woman and family after taking consent. But as per PC PNDT, the person should have performed 20 procedures prior to an independent procedure. Though other Obstetrical procedures like CS if improperly performed lead to maternal death. There is no such mandate for performing complicated surgeries.
Is this mandate of PCPNDT to be fulfilled? Is it the skill or is the decision to perform amniocentesis? An Obstetrician after getting a postgraduate degree or diploma can perform? Or it needs to be done only by Radiologists or Genecists or Fetal Medicine specialists? Opinion sought due to controversies among medical professionals.
