Doctors at a private hospital in Odisha have successfully treated a 9-year-old girl with liver failure utilizing a plasma exchange procedure. The patient had jaundice due to a viral infection and was taken to several hospitals before admitting to the private hospital. Upon admission, a senior gastroenterologist conducted an initial examination and transferred her to the NICU. After the patient developed respiratory distress , a team of doctors performed a plasma exchange.
Although the procedure is rarely performed in pediatric patients, they decided to proceed with it due to the severity of the patient’s condition. After explaining the risks and benefits of the plasma exchange to the girl’s parents, doctors performed four cycles of the procedure.
