Hormonal changes and decline sexual satisfaction are among the many drawbacks of obesity. Reportedly, obese men have experienced lower testosterone level and reduced fertility as compared to men having normal weight. A recent review published on obesity surgery has analyzed the effect of bariatric surgery on male sex hormones and sperm quality. This review included the results of 28 studies that were carried out between 1998 and 2018 with more than 1000 patients. It reported a significant increase in the testosterone level in obese men post-surgery.
Levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and sex hormone binding globulin also increased with testosterone. These changes in the hormonal levels led to the improved erectile function after bariatric surgery. However, there was no significant change in the sperm characteristics post-surgery.
