Synopsis According to some studies, drugs commonly used in intensive care units (ICU) such as psychoactive drugs, anticholinergic compounds, and opioids may have a direct or indirect effect on neurotransmission. This effect is the most common risk factor for delirium. However, conflicting evidence was observed in studies questioning the constant association between any psychoactive drug class and the development of delirium. Therefore, to make a definite conclusion, a multicentre, prospective, observational study was conducted in critically ill adults.

The study investigated the relationship between psychoactive drugs and the development of delirium for short-term and long-term exposure .
