The possibility of reversing the process of aging through gene therapy has been explored in the past. However, researchers have now demonstrated that it is possible to reverse aspects of aging using chemical rather than genetic means. Using mice and monkey models, researchers identified six chemical cocktails containing small molecules that could reverse signs of aging in less than a week.
The cocktails included prescription-only drugs for treating seizures, depression , and Parkinson’s disease . Some of the chemicals include sodium butyrate, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), alpha-ketoglutarate, valproic acid, CHIR-99021(glycogen synthase kinase-3 inhibitor), E-616452 (activin receptor-like kinase 5 inhibitor II), tranylcypromine, and forskolin.
