Although the incidence of pancreatic cancer load is lower in India as compared to western population, since 2010 there has been sharp increase in the number of cases of pancreatic cancer. This situation calls for more multi-centre studies and systemic documentation. This article reviews the current status of laparoscopic surgery in pancreatic tumours.

The association between laparoscopy and pancreas dates back to 1911, when researchers had explored the role of laparoscopy as a staging tool for pancreatic diseases. However the retroperitoneal location of pancreas, its proximity to various organs and vascular structures, the nature of the gland and the difficulty in its exposure made the progress of laparoscopy technique in pancreatic disease slower than the other diseases.
