An AIIMS-linked study conducted among 583 adolescents across 28 villages in Haryana, North India, has revealed a serious adolescent mental health crisis, with nearly one in six teenagers experiencing severe stress within six months. Researchers identified academic pressure, poverty, bullying, family conflicts, domestic violence, caregiver substance abuse, and social isolation as major contributors to emotional distress. Many adolescents reported anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, low self-esteem, hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts, while experts noted that many teens normalize these emotions instead of seeking help.
