New SARS-CoV-2 variants are rapidly emerging throughout the world. It is well established that when a virus multiplies in a human cell, it produces slight variations in its genetic material which may enable it to evade the immune response of the host. These variants could transmit more efficiently and reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines developed to protect against them. According to a survey conducted by the People’s Vaccine Alliance , 77 epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists, and virologists from 28 countries, the current COVID-19 vaccines may be ineffective in a year or less due to the mutations in SARS-CoV-2 .
