Many times our patients claim to have drug-related allergy (for example penicillin, aspirin, or ibuprofen etc.). After talking to many of my patients about their allergies and manifestations, I realized that they were misusing the term ''allergy". An incidence of small rash, stomach upset, diarrhea etc. were proof of an allergy.
Rather some patients claimed that their mother or father had an allergy, so he believed he would have it too! But they never got it tested and got it confirmed. How do you deal with such patients? Do you recommend an alternative appropriate drug or ask for history?
