PNDT act was made to prevent the female feticide and to maintain sex ratio. But this law is having many loopholes. For family planning reasons, a doctor can do any number of MTPs if he does not know the sex of the fetus. In this process, millions of female fetuses perish. Law does not bother about this. If the doctor knows the sex (female?) of the baby, he should not do MTP. It is an offense.

The doctor may do an MTP, and declare that he does not know the sex of the baby, and can escape punishment. This is the major defect in the law. Many couples who have same-sex siblings in first two pregnancies, and like to have a third baby with opposite sex. By sex selected termination, current science can provide this.
