Researchers at Swansea University are developing the world’s first multifunctional smart vaccine device that will deliver the COVID-19 vaccine and measure its efficacy by monitoring the body’s associated response. Researchers have used microneedles to create a ‘smart-patch’ that will deliver the vaccine and also measures a patient’s inflammatory response to the vaccination through biomarkers in the skin. According to the report published in the journal News Medical and Life Sciences, microneedles are a safe, effective, and low-cost method for vaccine delivery.
This microneedle delivery patch is easy to apply and minimally invasive, enabling a personalized vaccination approach. Vaccination using microneedles has the potential to overcome immune tolerance observed in pregnancy and lower vaccination costs through antigen dose-sparing, making it a superior immunization approach.
