Stroke is now one of the very important diseases which needs a more planned approach related to imaging modality. Stroke during the pre-CT era was mainly worked out clinically with a lumbar puncture to rule out various causes of stroke. The cardiac cause for possible embolisation was worked out using ECG and X-ray chest along with clinical finding. Echo was just introduced in 1980 in India and CT scan also came to Chennai around the same time and I was a postgraduate student at that time.

After the introduction of MRI, Doppler study of carotids and CT angiography of the Carotid system including Vertebrals the field of stroke have been revolutionised and the diagnostic acumen of stroke specialists improved.
