The Supreme Court on Friday sought the Government of India's views to allow doctors not to prolong life by artificial means such as life support systems in case a patient who is terminally ill or in a vegetative state desires to die while all his faculties are intact. The apex court has sought Centre's view on a plea by an NGO which is working for the right of a person to die with dignity. Presently, doctors in India are not allowed under the Hippocratic Oath to switch off life support systems except in medical cases involving brain-dead patients.
