Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, also known as GI hemorrhage is one of the common GI disorders that can occur in any organ in the GI system. It is broadly divided into 2 categories depending upon the location of the injuries either below or above the suspensory ligament (Treitz) of the duodenum.
Bleeding that originates above the ligament of Treitz usually classified as upper GI bleeding (hematemesis or melena) and the bleeding that originates below the ligament of Treitz is referred to as lower GI bleeding (hematochezia).
