We are celebrating 73rd Independence with great patriotism. But what does independence mean to me as an eye doctor at a personal level? Independence day means for me is freedom from preventable blindness (Tamso Ma Jyotirgamay). India is home to a third of the world’s blind population.

Our country has about 12 million individuals with visual impairment as against the global total of 39 million. On the occasion of 73rd Independence today, I wish that we can provide the precious "gift of sight" to each and every treatable blind person by performing sight-restoring surgery and increase awareness with combined efforts of eye doctors, optometrists, NGOs and healthcare workers.
