A large-scale study from India highlights how teleconsultation vision centers (VCs) are transforming rural eye care delivery. Across 41 VCs in 9 states, nearly 1.9 lakh patients were examined over 18 months, with 16% receiving spectacles, 30% managed with medications, 12% undergoing free cataract surgery, and over 25% referred for advanced care at base hospitals. Staffed by trained optometrists and supported by remote ophthalmologists through Skype and Remidio, these VCs demonstrate that teleophthalmology can bridge the glaring urban-rural healthcare gap, making eye care accessible, affordable , and sustainable while reducing tertiary hospital overload.
