The Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) represents a constellation of painful symptoms in the jaw muscles temporomandibular joints (TMJs). The term TMJ does not represent a diagnostic entity. For example , a patient may have osteoarthritis in the TMJ or from a non-reducing disk displacement with arthralgia.
Use of the term reduction refers to the position of the cartilaginous disk within the TMJ. A reducing disk displacement refers to a disk that is displaced while at rest but returns to normal position in the course of opening the mouth.Thus, a reducing disk displacement occurs when, during the course of opening the mouth , the disk literally snaps into place and normal anatomical relationships of joint structures are temporarily restored.
