This is not really the province of the physiotherapist but it is important for her to know whether the patient can hear ordinary speech or whether this is difficult. She also needs to know whether he can hear himself moving against the bedclothes or chair or his feet on the floor since the ability to do so makes a difference to his ability to move in a co-ordination manner and with assurance.

If any serious defect is detected, or the physiotherapist feels that there is a difficulty which may affect the patient’s ability to fully comprehend and interpret sound, it may be necessary to request that the patient is seen by an audiologist.
