Diabetes patients are often prescribed multiple medications to treat hyperglycemia and several other diabetes-associated conditions, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, and comorbidities. Medication adherence is a critical determinant of outcomes in diabetes patients and has been linked with better control of intermediate risk factors and lower odds of hospitalization. However, the majority of patients fail to adhere to the medication regimen. The high cost of medications, low health literacy, complicated drug regimens, personal beliefs, and mistrust of the healthcare system are the main reasons behind this.
