A routine blood transfusion proved to be life threatening for a four-year-old boy suffering from thalassemia when he received HIV-infected blood at Brahmapur local hospital, Orrisa. This boy from Ganjam district, Orissa was detected with thalassemia and thereafter has been receiving blood transfusions at a local hospital. Till date, he has received about 71 transfusions at the hospital blood bank. Eventually, the infection came into light when his parents took him for a blood test at a private clinic.

There he was diagnosed with HIV. The father of the alleged child says that the infection might be due to the transfusion of HIV-infected blood. To investigate further, the hospital authorities have set up an enquiry panel along with a five-member team under the instructions of the district administrative officer.
