India needs a lot of Primary Care Physicians, also known as General or Family Practitioners. Unfortunately we do not have a structured 2 or 3 years MD/MS PG Course in India. The newly qualified doctors obtain permanent registration and start practicing with just one year of rotating internship where nothing much is taught or learnt.

The newly qualified and registered doctors lack the basic medical and surgical skills and are ill equipped to carry out the multiple tasks expected of them. This is a common reason for young doctors not going to remote and difficult areas. It is essential that an expert committee be appointed immediately to study this major lacuna in our health system and suggest suitable measures to be implemented immediatley.
