Hello Friends, My question for which I don't think there exists an answer in medical textbooks. Is Yawning infectious? If so then what is the mechanism? Often while travelling in train, I keep observing people. Whenever someone yawns, there has to follow immediately another yawn or two by different passengers in the close vicinity.

Quite many times, I myself has PRETENDED a yawn with good natural style and I am sure to elicit a similar stimulus to see a couple of mouths go wide open. It is fun.You can try it yourself. But I am not able to reason out what is the mechanism behind this action. Sure no microbe business. And even when the yawn is not authentic as I wrote above it does create a reaction.
