The crowded streets of Sidhapudur near Gandhipuram in Coimbatore surprised everyone across the country on Sunday. This was the sad occasion of the funeral of a great man - Dr. Balasumbramaniam, beloved known as a ‘20 rupees doctor’. In his twelve years of clinical career, he charged less than 20 rupees to his patients. He had only begun to charge these 20 rupees from last two years. A very hard to imagine that he only had a nominal fees of rupees 5 in his initial but humble set up at Bodinayakknur of Theni district in Tamil Nadu.
While working at ESI hospitals in Coimbatore, the patients willingly gave him 5 Rs. as an extra amount to his charge of 10 Rs. More to add his greatness, an interviewed personnel said that the patients never spent more than 50 Rs including the cost of medications prescribed by Dr. Balasubramaniam.
