A common presentation of many febrile and non-febrile illnesses in children is thrombocytopenia. Though the etiological profile and presentation of thrombocytopenia varies among children, the main causes include increased platelet destruction, decreased platelet production, or excessive platelet sequestration. Among infective causes, viral infections like dengue are generally the most common ones. Other non-dengue infections include fungal and bacterial infections (gram-negative), enteric fever, malaria, and malignancies.
