As the Dengue "season" approaches ,one has to be wary of morbidities and mortalities arising out of thrombocytopenia.There are various  proposed etiologies of thrombocytopenia in Dengue syndromes which include: immunological causes,bone marrow depression and thrombotic microangiopathy (discusssed here). The pathophysiology behind thrombotic microangiopathy i(similar to Thromotic thrombocytopenic purpuras)in Dengue includes activation &imbalance of hemostatic and thrombotic pathways .It resembles TTP in that there are microclots composed of platelets and fibrin.It is believed that there is associated ADAMTS 13 (A serine protease that cleaves high molecular weight Von willibrands factor multimer)deficiency.
