UGC has drafted new regulations for recruitment, promotion and service conditions for academicians in Central Universities. As per Clause 1.1.1  of the above regulations, pertaining to healthcare sector educators, Ph. D has been made mandatory for recruitment, promotions as well as service conditions. This means that even after spending so many years doing MBBS/BDS, our young and dynamic doctors rich in clinical skills and acumen will spend another 3to 5yrs doing PhD if they want to get a job in a Central University.

It also means that a person with less clinical acumen might get selected as an Assistant Professor on the basis of PhD. This will create frustration amongst the younger generation doctors and also teaching cadre might not get good teachers. The senior-level doctors will reach stagnation as they will be forced to do PhD. Teaching Learning activities will become secondary.…
