Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible yet preventable blindness worldwide, accounting for nearly 8% of total blindness. In 2010, over 60.5 million people were affected by this condition. Among the 39.36 million individuals who are blind globally, over three million have lost their vision due to glaucoma. India bears the highest regional burden, contributing 23.5% to global blindness.

To raise awareness about glaucoma and its impact on eye health, the World Glaucoma Association observes World Glaucoma Week during the second week of March.
