What is psychosis ? Its a loosely used term even by us doctors depicting people who are "have lost it". However it is necessary to understand what the term really means as it indicates a pretty severe pathology. It is defined on as "a severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality". This is quite accurate in conveying the meaning but one thing is wrong is that its not a disorder per se, but a symptom of an underlying disorder.
So in psychosis the patient losses contact with reality. Speaking in language of psychoanalysis, the patient's ego boundaries are lost and the patient's mind has lost the ability in differentiating what is real and what is imaginary.
