Researchers from the New York University Langone Health have reported the successful survival of severely affected COVID-19 patients when cannulated with venovenous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) compared to ventilators. In a retrospective study, patients admitted to the ICU at NYU Langone Health between 10th March 2020 to 1st May 2021 were selectively managed with either mechanical ventilators or ECMO and were followed up for a year. The details of the study are represented in table 1.
