Gingivitis is a common and mild form of a gum disease (Periodontal disease) associated with redness of gums, swelling, and itching. Common symptoms include bad breath, swollen gums, and bleeding during brushing or flossing. The factors that increase the risk of developing gingivitis are poor oral hygiene habits, smoking or chewing tobacco, vitamin C deficiency, improper fitting of dental restorations, reduced immunity, hormonal changes, genetics, and microbial infections. Complications of gingivitis can lead to tooth loss, the spread of infections to other body parts through the bloodstream, and trench mouth in severe cases.
