Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition caused by inflammation of the epithelial lining. It affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age globally. The pathophysiology is unclear; the currently accepted theories are underlying anatomical abnormalities caused by adhesion and fibrosis, endocrine abnormalities, and inflammatory and immune disorders. Despite the low pregnancy rate and poor ovarian response to assisted reproductive techniques (ART), in vitro fertilization (IVF) results in successful implantation of the embryo in patients with endometriosis.
