A heart team at Kauvery Heart Institute, Chennai, has reported what is believed to be the world's first completely catheter based treatment of both failing valves in a patient who had previously undergone a Ross procedure. The intervention allowed the team to avoid repeat open heart surgery in a 58 year old man with advanced valvular disease and recurrent heart failure. The patient had undergone a Ross procedure nearly 25 years earlier.
He later developed severe aortic regurgitation, severe pulmonary regurgitation with moderate pulmonary stenosis, severe pulmonary hypertension, and moderate mitral regurgitation. His condition was complicated by repeated heart failure admissions, significant lower limb and abdominal edema, impaired renal and hepatic function, and New York Heart Association Class III to IV symptoms.
