Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a condition which damages retinal blood vessels in response to changes in blood sugar levels. It is the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population.

It is estimated that the number of people with diabetic retinopathy will grow from 126.6 million in 2010 to 191.0 million by 2030. Innovative and comprehensive approaches are needed to reduce the risk of vision loss by prompt diagnosis and early treatment.
