It is a disease of the otic capsule characterized by absorption of mature bone & laying down of spongy vascular new bone resulting in stapes fixation. There are certain predetermined sites for the otosclerotic focus. Whatever the site may be, ultimately it causes stapes fixation & conductive deafness. Causes of Otosclerosis - not definitely known; but most of the patients definitely have a genetic predisposition. Environmental factors trigger the onset of disease in genetically predisposed people.
Environmental factors are mumps infection & female sex hormones. This is the reason why females are affected more than males. Pregnancy, hormone pills are other environmental factors triggering Otosclerosis.
